The New Year's Resolutions You Can Make to Help the Environment
As we wave off 2020 in our rear view mirror, many of us are seeing 2021 as a great opportunity to make some positive changes in our lives.
Love them or hate them, New Year’s resolutions can really motivate us to make and stick to new habits and we think there’s no better time than now to start incorporating environmentally friendly practices into our daily lives.
To give you some inspiration, we’ve outlined a handful of eco-friendly New Year’s resolution ideas in today’s blog.
Cutting out/reducing meat and dairy
Many people say that cutting out, or even simply reducing, your meat intake is the single best thing that an individual can do to help the environment. This is because of the huge amount of damage that farming does to the planet year after year.
Research shows that 83% of farmland is taken up by animals, but animal products only provide us with 18% of the calories and 37% of the protein produced by the agriculture industry.
With that in mind, if more and more people adopt a plant-based or largely plant-based diet, it could have a wonderful impact on the planet.
Get Ecosia
Have you heard of Ecosia yet? We think it’s wonderful! Ecosia is ‘the search engine that plants trees’. Using the money made from advertising revenue, this organisation plants trees where they’re needed most.
So far, Ecosia has planted over 117,000,000 trees and that number is going up and up! Plus, its servers run on 200% renewable energy, making the organisation more than carbon neutral.
Switch to bamboo
Bamboo is an environmentally friendly alternative to a number of materials because it uses fewer resources and does less damage to the planet when it’s grown and harvested. It only needs rainwater to grow and, because it has no natural pests, it doesn’t need pesticides, either.
We create bamboo fabric bedding, eye masks, cushions, not only because they’re much better for the environment, but also because they’re much better for you, too! Our bamboo fabric products are soft, comfortable, breathable, and are antibacterial, antifungal, and hypoallergenic. Shop our collections.
Bring your own cutlery
If you’re going to a fish and chip shop or another type of takeaway restaurant, why not bring your own cutlery? Plastic cutlery given out by takeaway restaurants are often thrown in the bin after just one use, piling up in landfill, or worse, the ocean! Keeping your own reusable cutlery in your bag makes sure that you won’t have to use and discard plastic cutlery.
Be mindful of the light bulbs you use
It’s convenient to choose the cheapest and easiest options when you need to change your lightbulbs. But, taking the extra time to choose a more environmentally friendly light bulb benefits the planet and saves you money in the long run.
There are a number of eco-friendly light bulb brands on the market and CFL light bulbs use less electricity, are brighter, and can last 5 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs.
We know that few things are more important than caring for the environment. Hopefully this guide to some of the changes you can make in your everyday life has given you some inspiration.
